HANDS-ON : The motors designed low shaft output of 44W enables the student the grip the metal shaft mounted coupling with their hand and stall (Locked-Rotor) the shaft. Thus, the student is is able to physically feel the different starting torques predicted by their theory, i.e.:

  1. “Very-High” starting torque of the capacitor “START” motor; and
  2. “Low” starting torque of the capacitor “RUN” motor.

 

Logic behind the choice of 41.5 Vac for the single phase motor

Ideally, to conform with the 3ph, 41.5/24.0 Vac, 4 wire(3ph+E) Concept, it would have been preferable to have had the single phase motor operating on 24 Vac (i.e. phase to neutral).

Unfortunately, in practice, this proved nonviable on both economic and practical grounds. Mainly due to the size and cost of the capacitors but also due to the higher currents required.

However, in hindsight, this has proved to be a teaching advantage. As it highlights the (not very well understood) fact that a single phase supply is obtained from between two(2) points of potential difference i.e. not exclusively between phase & neutral but also between any two(2) phases!

For example:

  1. In a “Separated-Extra-Low-Voltage”(SELV) supply. i.e. between to actives;
  2. The use of a 415 Vac ‘single’ phase condenser fan motor in a 3ph, domestic air conditioners (phase to phase) to eliminate the need for a neutral conductor; or
  3. The use of a 415 Vac ‘single’ phase cooling fan motor in industrial welders. This enables the welder to be plugged into any Common/Normal standard ‘4 pin’(3ph+E) 3 phase outlet without concern of different phase sequences which would cause a 3ph motor to rotate in the wrong direction.  As well as again, eliminating the need for a neutral conductor which would require the use of a “NOT-Common” 5 pin(3ph+N+E) 3ph plug & socket outlet

Note, the direction of single phase motors is ‘factory preset’ and independent of phase sequence. Hence, this is the MAIN reason why ALL domestic appliance motors are single phase.

The latter two examples are commonly met in industry. AND, all to frequently, due to lack of knowledge and understanding a failed 415V single phase motor is replaced with a 240V single phase motor. Which to the annoyance of the customer, in turn, fails after a short period of operation!

Concept

This is a 3ph, 41.5 Vac, 44W, 4 pole, 50Hz, Wound-Rotor(Slip-Ring) Induction Motor(WRIM/SRIM)

Connecting the Secondary Rheostat (2550-3-100R) to the secondary winding enables the motor to develop the motors maximum torque at start (Locked-Rotor)

Also, The Secondary Rheostat (2550-3-100R) enables the variable speed (under load) characteristic to be demonstrated. With the inclusion of wattmeter(MI 7033), voltmeter, and ammeters in the circuit it can be clearly demonstrated when varying the speed with a constant load, that while the shaft output power changes with the speed (Power proportional to speed), the input power remains constant. The difference in the shaft output power to the input power can be shown to be being dissipated as heat in the Secondary Rheostat

i.e. P(input) = P(shaft) + P(rheostat)

It can also be demonstrated that the rotor speed(RPM) is maximum when the motor is unloaded. This characteristic is ideal for use on cranes the hook can be raised or lowered at maximum speed when unloaded, but speed control and maximum torque is available when raising or lowering a load.

It will be noted that the Secondary winding is Delta(Δ) connected rather than the more common Star(Y) connection. The method of the Secondary winding connection can be either Star(Y) or Delta(Δ) and is determined by the design engineer. For this motor practical and mechanical winding issues dictated that the Delta(Δ) connection be used. From a teaching perspective this is an advantage, as a practical demonstration of this alternative method of connection.

It should be noted by the teacher:
In designing and manufacturing this motor in such a small frame size and power rating, required the relative position of the Primary winding and Secondary winding to be reversed. i,e, the Primary winding is the rotating member(Rotor) and the Secondary winding is the stationary member(Stator). The re-positioning of these winding is not (and purposely so) obvious.  Depending on the level of student knowledge, and to avoid confusion, teachers, at their discretion, may, or may not, wish to highlight this point to their students.  However, the design, again, has the advantage of practically demonstrating this alternative design.

The superior performance of this 4th generation motor over the 3rd generation Betts model is primarily due to the re-positioning of the primary and secondary winding

PLEASE NOTE, the “eme” 4th generation motor has totally eliminated the 3rd generation Betts model’s two inherent design defects;
1. inability to obtain maximum torque at start(locked rotor) which was due to the wound rotors high internal resistance, and
2. the rotor “locking” or “cogging” in operation.

SET-UP

To best observe the operation of each starting method, connect a 5A Ammeter in series with Line 1(A1),  and a second 5A ammeter in series with motor lead U1 (A2).

Description of Starting Methods
.
1. D.O.L operation:
a. Rotate switch from ‘OFF’ in a clockwise(CW) direction one step to Δ (delta).
b. Note the currents and time (in seconds) for the Inertia Wheel to accelerate to full speed.
c, To switch off rotate switch Anti-clockwise(ACW) one step to ‘OFF’
.
2. Star/Delta – OPEN Circuit Transition operation:
a. Rotate ACW one step to ‘Y’ (Star).
b. Note the start Star connection currents (i.e. 1/3 the DOL value).
c. By observation of both the Inertia Wheel & Ammeters,
d. note the time (in seconds) for the Inertia wheel to accelerate to full speed.
e. When the current has been observed to fall to the minimum value, rotate the switch quickly CW two(2) steps to Δ (delta).
In this process it will be observed that the motor is disconnected from the line (as it passes through the ‘OFF‘ position) in order for the motors connections to be changed from Star to Delta.
i.e. ‘Open’ circuit transition’.
f. To switch off, rotate switch ACW one step to ‘OFF’
.
3. Star/Delta – Closed Circuit Transition (Wauchope) operation: a. Rotate the switch ACW one step to ‘Y'(star).
b. By observation of both the Inertia Wheel & Ammeters note the time (in seconds) for the Inertia Wheel to accelerate to full speed.
c. When the current has been observed to fall to the minimum value, relatively quickly rotate the switch ACW two steps through T1 to T2.         IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE:
Step T1 is the first stage of the transition from Star to Delta. It is here a set of 3 relatively low resistance resistors are connected both in Star and in parallel  with the motor,
Note, the resistors are connected across the full voltage and thus will be required to dissipate a large amount of heat.
In practice
this is a momentary  transition step and the heat loss is negligible.
Thus the student must be instructed to only dwell at step T1 long enough to observe Ammeter readings.
A Prolonged stay at switch position T1 may cause the resistors to overheat and burn-out.
d. When the switch is at position T2 the star point is opened, Thus without disconnecting the motor from the line the motor winding and resistors are connected in Series and in Delta (i.e.a Delta connected primary resistance starter connection).
e. Rotating the switch ACW one more step to Δ (delta) short circuits the series resistors, thus connecting the motor in Delta across the full voltage with out disconnecting the motor from the supply.
i.e. ‘Closed Circuit Transition.
f. To switch the motor off rotate the switch ACW two steps to ‘OFF’.

This set of three resistors are used to demonstrate the “Primary Resistance” method of reduced voltage starting of 3 phase Induction motors

The voltage is reduced to 80%

Note, in practice, the use of the ‘Primary resistance’ starter is a more cost efficient choice for reduced voltage starting of squirrel cage induction motors (SCIM). When a reduced starting voltage between full voltage(100%, or D.O.L.) and 80% of full voltage is required.

This is based on the ‘ratio’ of; the actual cost of the ‘Primary Resistance’ starter; to the cost of the energy dissipated (losses) within the starter (i.e. the resistors) during the motor staring sequence, when compared to that of the ‘Auto-Transformer’ starter.

For reduced starting voltages of 80%, and below, this cost ‘ratio’ (efficiency) swings in favour of the Auto-Transformer’ starter.

DESCRIPTION:
This set of 3 auto transformers may be used, in conjunction with the 3 phase induction motor (71-3-L004-A) to demonstrate a method of 3 phase reduced voltage starting

This method of reduced voltage starting in known as either an:

Auto-Transformer Starter (the American term – refers to the type of transformer), or a
Compensator Starter (the English term – refers to the function of the transformer)

The transformers may be connected in either of two common configurations:
1. three (3) leg starter (i.e. one auto transformer in each of the 3 phases), Star(Y) connection; or
2. Two(2) leg starter (i.e. one auto transformer in only two(2) of the phases). Open Delta()

Reduced voltages of 80%, 65%, or 50% may be selected

The transformer may be used to demonstrate either the:
1. Auto-Transformer(Compensator) Starter (i.e. Open-transition); or
2. Korndorfer Starter (i.e.Closed-circuit transition)
Note, the auto transformers have been designed to withstand the momentary short-circuit current which circulates within the auto-transformer during the closed-circuit transition stage from start to run

The auto-transformers can also be used to demonstrate the “single-wound” (non-isolating) ‘step-up’ or ‘step-down’ auto-transformer.

Also, the “DANGER” of using the “single-wound”(non-isolating) auto-transformer to ‘step-down’ voltage can be demonstrated (i.e. common section of the transformer winding accidentally going ‘open-circuit’ during operation)

Further, the student ‘must’ be made ‘very-aware’ of the, potentially fatal, “DANGER” of incorrectly connecting the common terminal on a variable voltage regulator (e.g. Variac™) which is simply an auto-transformer with a sliding (variable) secondary tap.

  1. Maximum Starting Torque:
    By increasing the resistance of the secondary circuit, by adding extra external resistance into the secondary circuit, so that the secondary resistance in ohms equals the secondary  inductive reactance in ohms, the motor can produce it’s maximum torque at start (i.e. R=XL), and by the addition of suitable metering, it can be shown that the Primary starting current is reduced
  2. Speed Control:
    By adjusting the value of added external secondary resistance, under load, the ability to gain speed control at constant torque is achieved.
    Again, by the addition of suitable metering, it can be shown that whilst the Primary input power and current remain constant throughout the speed range (at constant torque) the excess secondary energy is dissipated as heat through the external secondary rheostat resistance.
